Weekly Digital Marketing Roundup

May 22, 2017 - By Aaron Hockel

Here are the biggest announcements, product updates, and news stories impacting the digital marketing industry last week:

Google Pushing AMP Ads

At their annual Google I/O developer conference last week, Google introduced a number of new features related to AMP Ads. The major announcement included 6 new AMP ad formats, including a carousel format, and partnerships with Celtra, Moat, and a native video player. The reason for this? Google believes AMP ads will inherently have greater performance properties because they are mobile optimized. Right now AMP ads are supported by over 100 ad networks and Google said AMP ads will eventually work all HTML pages instead of just AMP pages. Watch the entire announcement from last week below, the amp ads portion starts at the 12:50 mark:

Facebook Starts Live Streaming Major League Baseball

In a move similar to Twitter's partnership with the NFL, Facebook began live streaming major league baseball games last Friday when they did a live broadcast of the Cincinnati Reds game against the Colorado Rockies. The game is the first of 20 Friday night matchups Facebook will stream live. As of right now Facebook is not planning to sell ads against the games, but it seems unlikely that a continued partnership would not eventually include advertising over live professional sports content. Google Opens Beta Test of 'Buy Button'

Google began taking requests to join the beta test for its "buy button" on shopping ads last week. The request is made via the Google Merchant center and will tag ads with a "Buy on Google" label on Android devices. Users with a Google Wallet will be able to quickly make purchases of products from Google hosted landing pages after clicking on the shopping ads. Below is a screenshot of how the "Buy on Google" label appears on ads. For more coverage of this story, read Ginny Marvin's article on Search Engine Land.   purchases-on-google-shoping ads button
