Weekly Digital Marketing Roundup

October 2, 2017 - By Aaron Hockel

Here are the biggest announcements, product updates, and news stories impacting the digital marketing industry last week:

Update to Google's Local Results

Websites containing content that exactly matches with search content will now be highlighted in Google's local results. The change has been in testing for a few weeks, but now appears to be permanent and rolling out globally. In the picture below, note how the first result includes "Their website mentions used car". This update was first reported about a month ago and you can read additional coverage on Search Engine Land by clicking here.

Microsoft Confirms LinkedIn/Bing Integration

Since Microsoft acquired LinkedIn, advertisers have been hoping to leverage the combined data of the two platforms. Now, that possibility is becoming a reality. Microsoft confirmed the integration during Advertising Week. How this impacts advertisers remains to be seen, but the ideal outcome would be cross referencing the data to improve ad targeting on both platforms.

Apple Goes Back to Google

Apple has dropped Bing as the default search engine for iOS and Mac. Starting last week, a global rollout began that should already be in place, to have Google power search on all Apple platforms. The deal with Google, Apple's original search partner, is said to be $3 billion. For more on this story, click here to read more on Tech Crunch.

Twitter Tests Expanded Character Count

Ready for longer tweets? Last week Twitter announced it will be testing 280 character counts, which double the current 140 character limit, on a limited basis in select languages. The test coincides with an interface update that shows a circle being completed, rather than a countdown of remaining characters.
